Fear of Deportation Disrupts America’s Farm Industry

Anika Markle

The Trump administration’s  promises of mass deportations are already affecting California’s agricultural industry. Migrant farm workers, essential to the state’s economy, are afraid to show up for work, causing disruptions that could lead to higher food prices.

Citrus Harvest at Risk

In Kern County, immigration agents recently conducted operations targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal records. This has sparked fear among migrant workers, many of whom are now staying home. The California Farm Bureau reports that the region’s citrus harvest has come to a near standstill, with crops at risk of being left in the fields.

“This is very concerning for the industry,” said a Farm Bureau representative. “Without workers, the fruit can’t be harvested.”

Broader Impact Looms

The impact isn’t limited to Kern County. In the Salinas Valley, where harvest season begins in April, growers are worried about how these fears will affect their 55,000 migrant workers. Many believe just the threat of deportation could be enough to disrupt the entire season. Crops left unharvested could lead to significant losses for farmers and higher prices at grocery stores.

Workers Call for Support

During the pandemic, these workers were celebrated as essential. Now, they are asking for the same support. On Wednesday, the Monterey County Farm Bureau joined local leaders in pledging to protect workers and their families.

Meanwhile, the Mexican Consulate assured migrant workers that their basic rights would be defended. “We are committed to ensuring they are treated fairly,” said a consulate representative.

As the nation watches what unfolds after the inauguration, California’s agricultural industry, which accounts for the nation’s 40% of produce,  is bracing for the uncertainty ahead—both in the fields and at the supermarket.
