Anika Markle In 1956, a 19-year-old Fred Parris, stationed in Philadelphia with the U.S. Army, poured his heart into creating a song for his sweetheart, Marla. After spending a memorable weekend with her, Parris couldn’t shake the emotions she stirred in him. “There’s only one first time,” he reflected in a 2004 interview.

Recording History in a Church Basement
Later that year, The Five Satins recorded the song in the chilly basement of St. Bernadette’s Church in New Haven, Connecticut. Despite the modest setup—just a couple of tape recorders—the result was magical. Parris believed the setting added something special. “I think the song was blessed,” he said in a 2013 interview.
Though Parris’ relationship with Marla didn’t last, the song he wrote for her endured, becoming a hallmark of love and longing.
